Egypt is a country in Northeastern Africa which is among the oldest of all the world's civilizations. It emerged as one of the first nation-states in the tenth millenium BC, and had some of the earliest known developments of centralized government, writing, art, agriculture, and great architecture. It is famous for its pyramids, the Sphinx, King Tut and other pharaohs, its hieroglyphic symbols, and its beautifully preserved mummies, to name a few. Egypt has at various times been part of the Greek, Persian, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and European worlds, and is currently a predominantly Muslim country, having been conquered by the Islamic Empire in the seventh century AD.
