Barry Cunliffe

Barry Cunliffe is an British archaeologist and author, and an acknowledged authority on the history of the Celts. After studying at the University of Cambridge he became a lecturer at the University of Bristol in 1963, and carried out extensive excavations of the Roman remains at Bath. He has since chaired the Department of Anthropology at the University of Southampton, and most recently was a professor of European Archaeology at Oxford. He has led many important excavations of Roman sites, Iron Age hill forts, and Celtic sites.

Cunliffe is a prolific author, a member of the Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee of English Heritage, Trustee of the British Museum, Governor of the Museum of London, and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 2006.
