Zabel Yessayan

Zabel Yessayan was an Armenian intellectual and activist whose writing often focused on Armenian rights and their oppression under the Ottoman Turks. Yessayan was born in 1878 and was one of the first Ottoman women to study abroad, enrolling in the Sorbonne in Paris in 1895. She wrote many articles about contemporary issues and was chosen as a delegate to provide aid in Adana after the 1909 massacres of Armenians.

Yessayan was targeted for arrest by the Ottoman police in 1915, but she escaped to Bulgaria and later the Caucasus, and spent years writing and publishing interviews with survivors of the Armenian Genocide. She was finally arrested in 1937 during Stalin's purge of Armenian intellectuals, and was imprisoned and tortured. She died around 1943 under unknown circumstances.
